New Service-Learning and Internship Opportunities Available Abroad through ELAP

Experiential Learning Abroad Programs (ELAP), the internship and service-learning division of International Studies Abroad (ISA), is pleased to debut a new program model. Beginning in Spring 2013, the “ELAP + ISA Combo” option combines academic study abroad programs with internships and will be offered at select ELAP/ISA sites across the world.

“The new ELAP + ISA Combo option will streamline this process for students by having one application, one program price and one set of dates,” ELAP Director Paul Hopkinson said.

New Sites in Costa Rica
ELAP is expanding to two new sites in Costa Rica, and beginning Spring 2013 will offer programs in Cartago and Veragua for the first time. Located 15 miles southeast of San José, ELAP placements will be available in Cartago during the Semester and Summer sessions. Students will be able to complete an 8 or 12-week internship at a variety of placements, such as a center for global awareness, children’s home, municipal office, and a school for at-risk boys.

“Cartago is most famous for its history, culture and colonial tradition,” Hopkinson said. “It’s an ideal location for students looking to immerse themselves and have an authentic experience.”

Elsewhere in Costa Rica, ELAP has launched a new two-week Summer Group Project in Veragua. The Veragua Rainforest Conservation Project will take place at a rainforest field station, and students will have the opportunity to learn about the Costa Rican rainforest through hands-on conservation projects and plant and animal research.

Internships in Morocco
Beginning Spring 2013, ELAP will offer internship opportunities for ISA students participating in the ISA academic program based at the Moulay Ismail University in Meknès, Morocco. Available placements will include a local medical clinic, a women’s rights association, a center for disabilities and an association for families.

“Morocco is a perfect location for experiential learning,” Hopkinson said. “The cultural richness and natural beauty present in Meknès invites the opportunity for ELAP participants to become immersed in the local community.”

A beginning level of either Arabic or French is recommended for ELAP participants in Meknès. Students must be enrolled in an ISA Morocco Semester or Academic Year programs in order to participate.

ELAP is a division of International Studies Abroad (ISA). For twenty-five years, ISA has been recognized as a leading provider of international education opportunities for U.S. and Canadian students. ISA offers a wide variety of study abroad programs at accredited schools and universities in Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, England, France, India, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Northern Ireland, Panama, Peru, South Korea and Spain.
